Some days you don’t need a sermon. You need a prayer for today, right now, before you’ve even figured out how you feel.
Maybe you woke up already tired. Maybe today has a hard thing in it you’ve been dreading. Or maybe it’s an ordinary Tuesday and you just want to hand it to God before it runs away from you.
Whatever kind of day it is, here are prayers you can borrow. A short one, a longer one, one for a heavy day and one for a fresh start. Each comes with a verse you can carry into the hours ahead. Read the one that fits, or pray straight through.
You don’t have to feel anything in particular to pray these. Prayer isn’t a mood you work yourself into. It’s a turning toward God, and it counts even when your heart is lagging a few steps behind your words.
A prayer for today
For any day, whatever it holds.
Father, this is the day you’ve made, and I want to walk through it with you and not ahead of you. I don’t know everything today will bring, but you already do, and that’s enough. Steady me where I’m anxious. Soften me where I’m hard. Help me notice the good I usually rush past. Whatever comes, let me meet it holding your hand. Amen.
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).
A short prayer for today
When you have ten seconds and a lot on your plate. Pray it at a red light, at the sink, before your feet leave the bed.
Lord, this day is yours. I’m yours. Lead me through it. Amen.
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans” (Proverbs 16:3).
That’s the whole prayer. On my busiest mornings it’s often the only one I get out, usually at a stoplight on the way to drop the kids at school. It still counts. God isn’t grading length.
A powerful prayer for today
For a day you need to face with more than your own strength.
God, I’m asking you for today what I can’t manufacture on my own. Give me strength for what’s heavy, wisdom for what’s unclear, and patience for the people who’ll test it. Go before me into the parts of this day I’m afraid of. Be behind me when I stumble. I’m not walking into today alone, because you’re already in it. Amen.
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8).
A prayer for a hard day
For the days you’d rather not get out of bed for at all.
Father, I’m tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix, and today feels like more than I have in me. I don’t have much hope of my own right now, so I’m asking you for yours. You don’t ask me to carry the whole day at once, only the next small piece of it. Help me do just that. Carry me through the parts I can’t carry myself. Amen.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
If today is heavy in a way that isn’t lifting, there’s no shame in reaching for more help, whether that’s a trusted friend, a pastor, or a doctor. Prayer and real help aren’t rivals. I’ve leaned on both, and needing support has never been a sign of small faith. Our prayer for strength in difficult times is written for exactly these stretches.
A prayer for a fresh start today
For the days you want to begin again, whatever yesterday held.
Lord, thank you that your mercy is new this morning, not worn thin by yesterday. I’m not dragging yesterday’s failures into today. You’ve set them down, so I will too. Give me a clean start and a soft heart. Help me try again. This is a new day, and I’m glad to be in it with you. Amen.
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23).
A prayer to end today
For the other end of the day, when you’re setting it down.
Father, the day’s done, finished or not. Thank you for the good in it, and I hand you the parts that went wrong. I’m not going to lie awake tonight carrying tomorrow. That’s yours. Let me rest, because you’re the one keeping watch. Amen.
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).
If evenings are when your mind gets loud, our evening prayers to end your day give you more words for winding down.
How to pray your own prayer for today
Borrowed prayers are a real gift, especially when your own words are gone. But it’s worth learning to pray a day in your own voice too, and it’s simpler than it sounds.
- Name the day honestly. Not the day you think you should have. The real one. What’s heavy, what you’re grateful for, what you’re dreading.
- Ask for one specific thing. Strength for a hard meeting, patience with a kid, courage for a phone call. Specific prayers are easier to pray and easier to notice answered.
- Hand it over and leave it there. The point isn’t to solve the day in prayer. It’s to put it in God’s hands and go live it — coming back whenever you need to.
If praying itself is the unfamiliar part, our plain guide on how to pray starts at the very beginning, no experience assumed.
Making a prayer for today a daily habit
A prayer for today is best when it’s not a one-off. The people who pray through their days regularly aren’t more spiritual than you — they just built a small, repeatable habit.
Anchor it to something you already do. Pray while the coffee brews, at the first red light, or with your feet still under the blanket. Keep the bar low enough that you’ll clear it on a bad day, because the bad days are the ones that make or break a habit. And when you miss, just start again tomorrow. Guilt has never built a single lasting habit.
If keeping the rhythm on your own is hard, the Still app can carry it for you. It gives each day a short prayer and devotion in the morning and a prayer to close the night, scripture spoken over calm narration, so you can close your eyes and be led instead of scrambling for words. Frequently asked questions
What is a good short prayer for today? A short prayer for today can be one honest line: “Lord, this day is yours. I’m yours. Lead me through it.” It doesn’t need to be long or polished. A single sentence handed to God at the start of the day is a real prayer.
How do I pray for my day in the morning? Name the day honestly, ask God for one specific thing you’ll need, and hand the whole day over to him. You can borrow a written prayer to get started, then pray the rest in your own words. Consistency matters more than eloquence.
What Bible verse is good to pray each day? Psalm 118:24 (“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it”) and Lamentations 3:22-23 (“His compassions never fail; they are new every morning”) are both short, memorable, and easy to pray back to God at the start of any day.
Does it matter if I don’t feel anything when I pray? No. Prayer is a turning toward God, not a feeling you generate. Praying when you feel nothing is still praying, and often the feeling shows up later, after the practice, not before it.
Conclusion: one prayer, one day at a time
You’re going to face today with something on your mind. A prayer for today just makes sure God is part of it from the start.
It doesn’t have to be long or beautiful. A borrowed line, an honest sentence, a verse prayed back. Then you go live the day, knowing you’re not walking into it alone.
I’m still learning to do this every day, and I miss plenty. But a prayer offered at the start of a day — even a rushed one at a red light — changes how the rest of it feels. Start with one today. Then do it again tomorrow.
