Some seasons ask more of you than you have. The diagnosis, the bills, the marriage that’s limping, the week that will not end.
You’ve been strong for everyone else. Somewhere in there, the tank went empty.
Here’s the good news buried in that: prayer for strength was never meant for the strong. Scripture reserves it for people exactly where you are — “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (Isaiah 40:29).
So don’t clean yourself up first. Here is a prayer for strength in difficult times, short ones for the days that ambush you, and verses to lean on when your own words give out.
Strength is asked for, not summoned
We treat strength like a personal resource — dig deeper, push harder, hold it together.
The Bible treats it like a supply line. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1) — not a reward for the composed, but help for people in trouble, present tense.
That changes what asking means. You’re not admitting defeat. You’re connecting to the source that was always meant to carry this. There was a year my husband was deployed and I was running the house and two small kids alone, and I finally learned the difference between gritting my teeth and actually asking — the first ran out around dinnertime; the second didn’t.
A prayer for strength in difficult times
Father, I’m at the end of what I have. You can see it — the tiredness that sleep doesn’t fix, the weight I keep lifting every morning. I’ve been trying to be strong on my own, and I can’t anymore. I don’t think I was ever supposed to. So I’m asking plainly: give me strength for this. Not for the whole road — just for today’s stretch of it. Be my refuge when I need to stop, and my strength when I need to keep going. Where I am weak, let your power rest on me, the way you promised. Hold what I can’t hold. Carry what I can’t carry. And stay close through all of it. Amen.
Short prayers for hard days
For the moments when even a paragraph is too much:
- “God, I’m empty. Fill what I can’t.”
- “Strength for this hour. Just this hour.”
- “You carry it. I can’t.”
- “Your power in my weakness. That’s the deal you offered.”
Pray one at the kitchen counter, in the car, before you open the door. Repeating yourself is allowed; leaning was never a one-time act.
Verses to pray with
When you have no words left, these were written to be borrowed:
Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary.”
Philippians 4:13: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Psalm 73:26: “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
Nehemiah 8:10: “Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
That second-to-last verse assumes the failing. Strength, in scripture, was never the absence of weakness — it’s what God does inside it.
Keeping strength through a long season
One prayed-through crisis is one thing. A season that grinds on is another. What helps the strength hold:
- Ask daily, not once. Manna came one day at a time on purpose. Ask for today’s strength today, and let tomorrow’s wait. I stopped trying to pray up enough strength for the whole deployment and just asked for the next day — and the next day always came with its own supply.
- Name the heaviest thing. “Give me strength” is vague; “give me strength for Thursday’s conversation” is a prayer with a destination.
- Let others carry, too. Tell one person the true weight of it. God’s strength often arrives with skin on.
- End the day handed over. Difficult seasons renegotiate everything at midnight. A short evening prayer settles the account before sleep.
When you’re too tired to pray at all, borrowed words can hold the line. The Still app pairs spoken prayers with calming scripture and soft narration, so you can close your eyes and let someone pray strength over you until sleep comes. Download Still on the App Store.

Frequently asked questions
What is a powerful prayer for strength? The most powerful prayer for strength is an honest one: name what’s emptying you, ask God to carry it, and borrow his promises back to him — Isaiah 40:29-31 and 2 Corinthians 12:9 were written for exactly that exchange. Power isn’t in the wording; it’s in the handing over.
How do you pray when you’re going through hard times? Small and often beats long and rare. One honest sentence — “God, I need strength for this” — prayed at every hard turn of the day, does more than a perfect prayer you’re too exhausted to say. If even that fails, pray scripture: Psalm 46:1 works when nothing of your own will come.
Conclusion: strength for today’s stretch
The difficult season may not lift this week. But you were never asked to carry it alone, and you were never meant to have enough on your own.
Ask again tomorrow. That was always the arrangement. His strength arrives the way bread does: daily, enough, and on time.
And when the weight you’re carrying is for the people you love, our prayer for my family brings them before God by name.
