You love these people more than you know how to say, and some days that love mostly shows up as worry. The kid who’s struggling. The marriage that’s tired. The parent getting older. You want to protect all of it, and you can’t, and that’s a hard thing to hold.
Prayer is where you set the people you love in hands stronger than yours.
Here’s a prayer for your family you can pray right now, short daily prayers for specific needs, and verses to pray over the people under your roof.
Why praying for your family matters
Most of what a family needs is outside your control. You can’t guarantee anyone’s health, choices, or safety. That helplessness is real, and it’s loud at night.
Praying for your family doesn’t deny the limits — it takes them to the one who has none.
There’s an old picture of this in Job. Every so often he “would make arrangements for them to be purified… he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, Perhaps my children have sinned” (Job 1:5). A parent, quietly covering his kids before God, just in case. That instinct is ancient and it’s holy.
It changes you, too. It’s hard to stay angry at someone you’re carrying to God every night. Some seasons, praying for a person is the thing that keeps your heart soft toward them.
A prayer for my family
Father, I bring you my whole family — the ones in this house and the ones far from it. You know each of them better than I do, the parts they show me and the weight they carry alone. Protect them. Keep their bodies healthy and their minds steady. Guard the roads they travel and the choices they make. Where we’re strained, bring peace. Where we’ve grown distant, close the gap. Make this home a place where your love is the loudest thing. And make me the kind of presence they can lean on — patient when I want to snap, present when I’d rather check out. Hold every one of us through today, and bring us back together at the end of it. Amen.
Short daily prayers for your family
Pray one of these over your family each morning or night. Say them by name — swap in the real names as you go.
For protection: “Lord, put your hand over each of them today. Guard their coming and going, and bring them home safe.”
For health: “Father, strengthen their bodies and steady their minds. Be the healer in this house, and near us when we’re worn down.”
For a family in a hard season: “God, this stretch is heavy on all of us. Carry what we can’t. Hold us together when the strain wants to pull us apart.”
For your kids: “Lord, watch over my children where I can’t. Give them good friends, wise choices, and the sense that they’re deeply loved — by you and by me.”
For peace at home: “Father, quiet what’s tense here. Make our table a place of grace, and let this be a home that feels like rest.”
A short prayer for family protection and health
Keep this one short enough to pray at the door on the way out:
“Lord, cover my family today — body, mind, and heart. Keep them healthy, keep them safe, and keep them close to you. Amen.”
Praying for protection isn’t superstition, and it isn’t a guarantee that nothing hard will come. It’s naming the people you love before God and trusting his care even in the things you can’t see coming.
Verses to pray over your family
Joshua 24:15: “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
Psalm 127:1: “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.”
Deuteronomy 6:6-7: “These commandments… impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road.”
3 John 1:2: “I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
Psalm 103:17: “From everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children.”
Pray these as blessings, not just verses to read. Put your family’s names inside them and let the words do the asking when yours run out.
When you don’t have the words
Some nights the words won’t come. There’s a night I still think about — one of my kids had had a rough week, nothing I could fix, and I stood in the bedroom doorway and just watched them sleep because I couldn’t get a sentence out. So I didn’t. I let standing there be the prayer.
God takes that. “The Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans” (Romans 8:26). You can pray over a sleeping kid with your hand on the doorframe and no words at all, and it counts.
I’ve got a fifteen-year-old who mostly doesn’t want tucking in anymore and a ten-year-old who still does — holding on and letting go at the same time. Prayer is where I do both.

Making family prayer a habit
Praying for your family works best as a rhythm, not a one-time thing:
- Pick a set time. The drive to school, the minute before dinner, lights-out. Attach it to something you already do.
- Pray by name. “Bless my family” drifts; “give Jonas courage for his test, steady Emma’s week” lands.
- Pray together sometimes. A single sentence out loud at the table teaches kids that this is normal — you don’t need a program.
- Cover the hard seasons out loud. When something’s wrong, name it in the prayer. Kids carry less when they hear it handed to God.
Our evening prayers to end your day give you ready words for the lights-out version, and when the family is walking through something hard, our prayer for comfort in difficult times holds that ground.
Conclusion: covering the ones you love
You can’t walk every road for your family or shield them from every hard thing. But you can bring them, by name, to the one who never leaves their side.
That’s not a small thing to do for the people you love. Most days, prayed faithfully, it’s the biggest.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good prayer for my family? A good family prayer names each person and asks God to protect them, keep them healthy, and hold you together — then asks him to make you a steadier presence in the home. It doesn’t need to be long: “Lord, cover my family today, body, mind, and heart, and keep them close to you” is enough.
How do I pray for my family’s protection and health? Pray specifically and daily — name each person, ask for protection over their day and health in their bodies and minds, and hand them over rather than trying to carry the worry yourself. Praying Psalm 91 over your household is a time-worn way to do it.
What does the Bible say about praying for your family? Scripture treats it as central. Job covered his children before God (Job 1:5), Joshua committed his whole household to the Lord (Joshua 24:15), and parents are told to pass faith on at home (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). Praying for your family is presented as one of the most ordinary and important things a believer does.
