A Prayer for a Friend: For Their Need, in Their Corner

A woman and a man face each other and gently hold a small flowering plant together, bathed in a warm glow.

Someone came to mind as you opened this page. That’s usually how it starts — a friend going through something, and you standing outside it, wanting to help and holding only worry.

Prayer is what turns that worry into something with a destination.

And it matters more than it feels like it does. “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16) was written about exactly this: ordinary people praying for the people they love.

Here is a prayer for a friend you can pray now, short ones for specific situations — including one to send them directly — and verses that keep you company in the praying.

Why praying for a friend changes things

When a friend is struggling, most of what you feel is helplessness. You can’t fix the diagnosis, the divorce, the depression.

Prayer refuses the helplessness without denying the limits. You bring your friend to the one person who has no limits — the way the four friends in Mark 2 carried the paralyzed man to Jesus when he couldn’t walk himself. That’s the whole job description: carry, and lay them down there.

It also changes you. It’s hard to gossip about, resent, or give up on someone you’re carrying to God daily. I lead a small women’s group, and the thing I’ve learned there is how often people don’t need my advice at all — they need a witness, and they need to be prayed for by name.

A prayer for a friend

Father, I bring you my friend. You know them better than I do — the parts they show and the weight they carry quietly. Right now they’re walking through something I can’t fix, and I won’t pretend to you that I can. So I’m doing what I can do: I’m placing them in your hands, which is the safest place I know. Meet them where the struggle actually is. Give them strength where they’re depleted, comfort where it hurts, and light for just the next step. Show me my part — the call, the meal, the sitting alongside — and keep me faithful in it. And through all of it, let them know they’re not alone. Not by me, and never by you. Amen.

Short prayers for specific situations

For a sick friend: “Lord, be their healer and their peace. Steady the treatments, the doctors, and the long nights — and stay closest when it’s frightening.”

For a friend who’s struggling: “God, carry what they can’t. Put your strength under them today, and one person in their path who makes it lighter.”

For a friend far from you: “Father, keep pursuing them. Stay near even where they’ve stopped looking, and let something this week point them home.”

In thanks for a friendship: “Thank you for them, Lord. Guard what we have, deepen it, and make me the kind of friend you’ve been to me.”

A short prayer to send a friend

Sometimes the kindest move is letting them read the prayer themselves. Send this as it is, or make it yours:

“Praying for you today — that God gives you strength for exactly what this day holds, peace where it’s heavy, and the certainty that you’re not walking this alone. He’s for you, and so am I.”

Verses to pray with

Proverbs 17:17: “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: “Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”

James 5:16: “Pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

Philippians 1:3-4: “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.”

John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Paul’s line in Philippians makes a good habit: every time the friend crosses your mind, let the thought finish as a prayer. I keep a couple of names in my own evening prayer, and there’s a particular steadiness in handing the same people over night after night.

Keeping a friend in prayer, not just in mind

“I’ll pray for you” is easy to say and easy to lose. What makes it stick:

  • Tie it to the trigger. Every time they come to mind, pray one sentence right then. The worry itself becomes the reminder.
  • Pray specifics, not summaries. “Be with Sarah” drifts; “give Sarah courage for Thursday’s scan” lands.
  • Tell them, concretely. A text saying prayed for your appointment this morning delivers half the comfort of the prayer itself. I send these more than I used to, because I remember how much the ones I received meant.
  • Keep a name in your evening prayer. The day’s end is the natural place to hand your people over for the night.

If your evenings need help holding that space, the Still app closes each day with an evening prayer and calming scripture — a built-in moment to bring your friend before God before you sleep. Download Still on the App Store.

When the friend you’re praying for is anxious, our prayer for anxiety is written to be shared; if they’re worn down, send the prayer for strength in difficult times. And for the friendship’s harder seasons, our Bible verses about peace hold the relational ground. When the friend is unwell, our prayer for the sick and prayer for healing put words to the vigil. And when they’re grieving someone they’ve lost, our prayer for a grieving friend gives you words for that too.

Frequently asked questions

How do you pray for a friend? Name them, name the actual situation, and ask God to meet it — then ask for your own part in the answer. One specific sentence prayed at every reminder beats a long prayer prayed once.

What is a good prayer to send to a friend? Short, warm, and about them rather than about prayer itself: “Praying God gives you strength for today, peace in the middle of it, and the certainty you’re not alone.” Sending it in your own words matters more than getting the words right.

What does the Bible say about praying for friends? James 5:16 commands it and calls it powerful; Job 42:10 ties Job’s own restoration to the moment he prayed for his friends; and Jesus in John 15 raises friendship to the highest love there is. Scripture treats praying for friends as central, not optional.

Conclusion: the friend who carries

You can’t walk your friend’s road for them. But you can carry them to the one who walks it with them — as often as they come to mind, for as long as it takes.

That’s not the smallest thing you can do. Most days, it’s the biggest.

And when the ones on your heart are closer still, our prayer for my family carries the same love home.
