When sickness comes, prayer is often the first thing you reach for and the hardest thing to find words for.

You want to ask for healing. You also don’t want to bargain, or say the wrong thing, or feel like you’re demanding something from God. I’ve stood at more than one bedside not knowing how to start.

Here’s the good news underneath all of it: you don’t have to get the words right. God isn’t grading the prayer. He’s listening to the person.

Below are prayers for healing you can pray as they are — for your own body, for someone you love, and for the long days when healing feels slow. Say them out loud, whisper them, or let them start you off until your own words come.

A short prayer for healing you can pray right now

When you need something to say immediately, start here:

Lord, you are the God who heals. I come to you tired and afraid, and I ask you plainly: heal me. Touch what is broken. Steady what is shaking. Where I can’t see a way forward, I trust that you can. Be near me in this, and let your peace guard my heart while I wait. In Jesus’ name, amen.

That’s enough. A prayer doesn’t have to be long to be heard.

A prayer for your own healing

For the days the sickness is yours to carry:

Father, you know this body better than I do — every ache, every fear I haven’t said out loud. I bring all of it to you.

I ask you to heal me. Restore what illness has taken. Give the doctors wisdom and give the treatment its work. And where healing is slow, hold me steady so I don’t lose heart.

When I’m frightened, remind me you are close. When I’m worn down, be the strength of my heart. I don’t know how this ends, but I know who holds it. I’m putting myself in your hands. Amen.

Praying for your own body isn’t selfish or small. God invites you to ask, by name, for what you need.

A prayer for a loved one who is sick

When it’s someone you love — a parent, a partner, a child, a friend:

Lord, I’m bringing [name] to you. You see them right now, in the bed I can’t always sit beside, in the fear I can’t take away.

I ask you to heal them. Ease the pain. Calm the fear. Guide every hand that’s caring for them. And where I feel helpless, remind me that they were yours before they were mine, and that your love for them runs deeper than my own.

Give them your peace tonight. Give the people around them strength. And give me the faith to keep praying, even when I can’t see a change yet. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Saying their name into the prayer matters. It puts the person you love directly in front of the God who heals.

A prayer for when healing is slow

Some illnesses don’t lift quickly. For the long recovery, the chronic condition, the caregiver running on empty:

God, I’ll be honest — I’m tired of waiting. I’ve prayed this prayer more times than I can count, and I’m still here, still asking.

Meet me in the waiting. If you’re not going to take this away yet, then be enough for me inside it. Let your grace be sufficient the way you promised. Renew my strength when I have none left. And keep my eyes on you and not only on the diagnosis.

I still believe you are good. Help me believe it on the days I can barely feel it. Amen.

Paul prayed three times to be healed and instead was given grace to carry what remained. If your healing is slow, you are in faithful company. I’ve prayed for a healing that didn’t come the way I asked — and I won’t tie a neat bow on that. What I can tell you is that God stayed close in the not-yet, and that turned out to be its own kind of mercy, even when it wasn’t the one I wanted.

How to pray for healing when you don’t have the words

If even these prayers feel like too much some days, keep it simple:

  • Pray the name and the need. “Lord, this is [name], and this is what’s wrong.” That’s a complete prayer. God fills in the rest.
  • Let scripture pray for you. When your own words run dry, read a verse like Psalm 103 or Jeremiah 17:14 slowly, and let it become the prayer.
  • Pray with your body, not just words. A held hand, a bowed head, tears — these are prayers too. God reads them. I’ve prayed plenty of times with nothing but a hand on someone’s shoulder because that was all I had.
  • Ask others to pray with you. Scripture tells the sick to send for people (James 5:14). You were never meant to carry this in silence.

Let scripture shape your prayer

The Bible gives healing prayers their backbone. A few verses to pray straight from:

  • Jeremiah 17:14 — “Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved.” A prayer you can say word for word.
  • Psalm 103:2-3 — “Praise the Lord… who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.” A reminder of who you’re asking.
  • Psalm 41:3 — “The Lord sustains them on their sickbed.” A verse for the one who can’t get up.
  • 2 Corinthians 12:9 — “My grace is sufficient for you.” For the days healing hasn’t come.

For a fuller set to pray through, our 25 healing scriptures are grouped by exactly these moments. When the healing you need is emotional, our Bible verses for emotional healing name that kind of recovery, and for a surgery or serious diagnosis, our comforting Bible verses for sickness and surgery are written for the waiting room.

When to pray and see a doctor both

Praying for healing and getting medical care were never rivals. Luke, who wrote much of the New Testament, was a doctor, and scripture is full of God healing through ordinary means.

If you or your loved one is unwell, seeking treatment is part of how God’s care arrives. Pray boldly and follow the medical advice — they belong together. I’ve never once found that trusting God meant skipping the appointment.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good short prayer for healing? “Lord, you are the God who heals. Touch what is broken in me, steady what is shaking, and hold me close while I wait. In Jesus’ name, amen.” Short prayers are fully heard — length was never the point.

How do I pray for someone else’s healing? Name the person, name what they’re facing, and ask plainly for healing and peace over them. Praying a verse like Psalm 91 straight over them helps when you don’t have your own words. Our prayer for the sick is written for exactly this.

What if I pray for healing and nothing changes? You’re in the company of Paul, who asked three times and instead received grace to carry what remained (2 Corinthians 12:9). Keep asking, and keep trusting God’s presence in the waiting. A prayer for strength can carry you through the long stretch.

Conclusion: bringing your whole need to God

However you came to this page — sick yourself, or holding the name of someone you love — you don’t have to find perfect words. You only have to bring the need.

Pick the prayer that fits today and pray it out loud. Say the name. Ask plainly.

Healing is God’s to give, in his way and his time. Your part is simply to keep coming, and you already have. Comfort often begins the moment we stop carrying it alone — and you can also lean on our prayer for comfort in difficult times and a prayer for a friend when the weight is shared.
