About Psalm 23:1
Psalm 23 is attributed to David, who was a shepherd before he was a king. Its first line sets the picture for the whole psalm: God as the shepherd who leads, feeds and protects. “I shall lack nothing” (older translations: “I shall not want”) is a statement of trust, not a claim to have everything. The psalm moves from green pastures through the valley of the shadow of death to a table set in God’s house. It is read at funerals and at bedsides because it speaks of being accompanied, not of being spared.
